Influence of Wet Film Thickness on the Functional Applications of Biopolymers in Paper Conservation

In heritage conservation, paper deterioration can be slowed down by controlling the environmental conditions surrounding objects and stabilizing materials these are made of. As conservation also cause optical, chemical, physical changes in object, their application should safe, minimalistic, purposeful. This aimed to observe functional applications of three biopolymers used conservation. For that purpose, a model was coated with methylcellulose (MC), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), wheat starch (WSP) using different wet film deposits. The prepared samples were characterized determining physical, surface properties. results show deposit thickness influenced With CNCs, increase has caused drastic change colour properties, MC hydrophobicity increased WSP grammage increased. All coatings (except CNC24) have contributed preservation properties from damage thermal ageing.
